The Canon EOS 5D was revolutionary upon release, providing a compact full-frame option, better suited to handheld shooting than any previous DSLR release. The 5D Mark II possesses these same qualities, with a host of improvements to provide a more modern option to the original. A 21.1MP full-frame CMOS sensor pairs with the DIGIC 4 image processor for excellent image quality across a wide range of shooting conditions, including impressive low-light performance with an ISO range of 100–6400 (expandable to 50–25600). Full HD 1080p video recording is also on board, complemented by an external microphone input and HDMI output for greater creative flexibility.

The 5D Mark II features a bright optical viewfinder with approximately 98% coverage and 0.71x magnification, ensuring compositions are rendered with excellent accuracy. A 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor with 920,000-dot resolution makes image review and Live View shooting easy to manage. Autofocus is handled by a 9-point AF system with 6 assist points, while metering is provided by a 35-zone TTL full-aperture metering system. The camera shoots at up to 3.9 frames per second and offers a shutter speed range of 30–1/8000 sec, with a flash sync speed of 1/200 sec.

Built for professional use, the body is constructed predominantly from magnesium alloy and features weather sealing at key points for improved dust and moisture resistance. The LP-E6 battery offers strong capacity, and the camera provides detailed battery status information in-menu to help keep you shooting longer. Storage is handled via a single CompactFlash (CF) card slot, and connectivity includes USB 2.0, HDMI out, and a 3.5mm external microphone input.
